Penny is a patient 12 year old and likes to sniff. She weighs 60 pounds, or so. “Maybe 63, because of the holidays.” Technically she is not a person, she is a beautiful shepherd from the Czech region. She was one of many dogs my dog wanted to meet. In fact, Cali met her quota for the month in one outing to Golden Gate park.
Penny’s owner, Diane, was suspect with all my questions. She was reluctant to offer much about herself even after I told her what I was doing. But boy could she boast about Penny. She spoke about her as if Penny were human.
I got her point of view. I didn’t judge her. I know that some people have been hurt before and need that barrier between them and reality. And a Shepherd is a great dog to provide the safety and security Diane probably needed. Like Penny, she too is a rescue.
I’m pretty sure the Shepherd mix in Cali will provide the protection for me and my family. But today, as a four month old puppy, she was also going to make sure I met my quota of people in between sprints and sniffs.
